Product Background and FAQs

Question: How did this series come about?

Answer: Since 1987 we have taught the differences between the systems in classes and seminars. This summer Eric and Kevin Lamkin were giving a seminar about the development of the Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts. Several questions arose about the differences between the Parker and Tracy systems of Kenpo. The attendees loved it and asked for a second session to be taped for reference material.

Question: What happened to the technique Clawing Panther?

Answer: Clawing Panther is a technique that forms a family head, or root technique, from which many follow. It is still in the Tracy's system, however, not in the Parker System. The Parker System only has 18 of the 24 root techniques of kenpo. This series demonstrates the absence of certain techniques and how Ed Parker's 'Formulation Equation' was designed to inspire the kenpo adept in designing a tailored system to themselves. You will witness techniques tailored 'on-the-fly' as a result of the reactions of the opponent not conforming to the 'Ideal Phase' scenarios.

Question: Is this material accurate, or opinionated?

Answer: Kevin Lamkin is a 6th degree Black belt in both the American Kenpo System and in the Tracy's System. Eric Lamkin is a 5th Degree Black Belt in both systems. We are currently the only known instructors that actively, and currently teach both systems of kenpo, and the Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts. The material presented is accurately presented from the perspective of the respective systems. You will be able to use this reference material as authority to teach from.

Question: Which system is the best, Tracy's Parker's or the Elite-Fighters System?

Answer: We do not state that one system is better than the other. You will find that the various systems present kenpo in different ways. Ed Parker states that kenpo must be tailored to the individual. Not only has kenpo been tailored to the individual, it is obvious that the practitioners who have excelled in the various systems of kenpo, have done so because the material is presented in a way that best suits them. Tracy's Kenpo is not for everyone. Those who excel in Tracy's do so because the system works for them. The same goes for the Parker System. What works for the Tracy practitioner may not always work for the Parker student due to learning, training and practice styles.

Question: What system of Kenpo is the Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts?

Answer: We do not regard the Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts as only a Kenpo System. However, the beginning level of the system resembles mostly kenpo, before it progresses to the advanced levels.
The American Kenpo Legacy Association now uses the Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts for the 4th - 9th degree black belt material.

Question: Which System should I start in?

Answer: After you view the seminar series #1, you will be better equipped to decide which system is best suited for you.
- If you prefer the Tracy's approach, the you should contact Al Tracy at www.tracyskarate.com
- If you prefer the Parker American Kenpo Karate approach, then you should begin with our American Kenpo Karate Home Study Course www.arnis.org
- If you prefer the Elite Fighters System, you are in the right place. Read through the material on the web site and start at the Defender Level. This is the future of the martial arts!
