Elite-Fighters System of Martial Arts

Baton versus Angular Slashing Blade Attack

As a law enforcer, you may be confronted by an attacker suddenly producing a blade and begin slashing at you. Most martial arts systems teach knife thrusts and overhead attacks. However, the most common attack by an non-trained martial artist on the street is a slashing attack. These attacks can be angular (the most difficult to defend against). In this scenario, we will study the defense against an inward-downward diagonal slashing blade attack while you are in the process of drawing your collapsible baton out of its carrier.

Attacker slashing toward your throat

As the attacker slashing toward your throat, strike the attacker's arm with the collapsible baton.

You can use either the point or the butt end of the baton to interrupt the path of the blade.

Grab the wrist with your left hand

Grab the opponent's wrist with your left hand as your right hand begins to deploy the baton. This must be done quickly.

If you cannot get a grip on the wrist, disengage and increase the gap between you and the attacker with a lateral retreat.

Expand baton while holding on. Allow the baton to fully engage expand while maintaining a tight grip on the opponent's wrist.
Your next action depends on the following circumstances ...
Strike the opponents knee with the baton.

If the opponent becomes disarmed, strike the opponent's forward leg with the baton to cause the opponent to submit to an arrest.

In this photo the left leg is forward. To prevent injury, do not strike to the joint, strike to the main muscle group just above the knee.

  or ...
Strike the opponent's inner thigh with baton. In this photo the left right is forward. To prevent injury, do not strike to the joint, strike to the main muscle group just above the knee.
  or ...
Strike the opponent's radial bone with baton

If the opponent still has the knife in his hand, you can strike his inner forearm (radius bone) to disarm the blade.

This strike could break the arm.

  or ...
Strike the opponent's temple with baton

If lethal force is necessary to protect your life, strike the opponent's temple.

This is a potentially fatal strike. However, to protect your life, if the opponent has another weapon, or if there are other attackers present, this may be your only choice. Always stay within the law and your departmental policies.

Lock the opponent's elbow with baton

After you complete the last strike, finish the opponent with submission hold/joint lock using the baton.

In this case, we will circle the baton underneath and behind the opponent's striking elbow, wrenching his arm straight while forming an arm bar.

This is sometimes referred to as soft intermediate weapon control by many police departments.

Form an arm bar/choke with baton

Complete the hold by maintaining the arm bar with your left hand and the baton, at the same time placing the tip of the baton on the opponent's throat.

The combination of pulling the baton handle toward yourself and locking out the opponent's wrist, forms a very strong arm bar and cuts off the blood supply to the right side of the opponent's neck.

This technique is very effective and easy to execute.
